Chapter 5- Explore The Many Uses Of Coconut Oil

If you’ve read the studies and want to experience the health benefits of coconut oil for yourself, you’re not alone. Too many people buy a jar, then don’t know what to do with it when they get home, however. If you’re not from a culture where coconut oil is used regularly, it may be hard for you to include it in your regular routine. Here are a few ideas and practical tips to help you get the most out of this exciting natural lipid.

Coconut Oil Beauty Routine

Studies show that coconut oil is a better choice than mineral oil and many other vegetable fats when it comes to hair, skin and nail care. Unlike mineral oil, this substance is easily absorbed into the skin. Unlike other vegetable fats, it does not become sticky or leave an unpleasant film. Consider switching from expensive, chemical-laden products to simple coconut oil. It works as a deep conditioner and a skin moisturizer. When rubbed on the nails, it helps prevent splitting and cracking.

To control flyaway hairs and provide light conditioning, brush your fingers across the top of a jar of coconut oil, then run them through your hair. The strands will pull the oil off your skin, leaving your hair conditioned but not greasy. It’s a great alternative to mousses, gels and other alcohol-laden hair products. You only need a little, making coconut oil a much less costly option even for people with very long hair. Plus, unlike conventional hair-care products, the oil actually helps your hair instead of damaging it.

Cooking with Coconut Oil

While cooking with this oil may seem daunting at first, it doesn’t actually need to be difficult. Simply substitute it anywhere you would use butter, margarine or other solid fat. Melt a spoonful of coconut oil in a wok for stir fries. Saute vegetables in it for use in sauces, soups and other foods. Cut chilled refined coconut oil into flour for great, dairy and trans-fat free pie crusts and biscuits. While it might take a little while to get used to, you’ll soon wonder why you ever used any other type of cooking fat.

If you feel like coconut oil is too strange for your usual cooking, or if you have a family member who especially dislikes it, you can still get its benefits. Try stirring a spoonful into a mug of hot cocoa for added richness, or use this unique fat in your morning oatmeal. It’s a great alternative to many processed fats, whether you choose an oil with a strong coconut flavor or one that’s significantly milder. Just be willing to experiment with your food until you find a method of consuming coconut oil that works for you. For most people, just two or three tablespoons per day are enough to provide better health.

Heat-Free Coconut Oil Recipes

You may not always want to heat the coconut oil you use. This is especially common for people who live in very warm climates or who prefer a raw diet.
